PAWS Puppy 1

paws-puppy-toryDo you have a new puppy? Want to get a good start with its training and have fun at the same time? This 5-week course will focus on helping you and your pup build a partnership by teaching the basics in a fun, motivational way. We’ll also teach you how to incorporate play into training and how to keep your pup’s focus on you around distractions.

Requirements:

  • Open to puppies 8 weeks to 6 months of age.
  • This course is open to everyone (PAWS members and greater community).
  • Proof of current rabies and distemper vaccines must be provided prior to attending the 1st session for all participants.

PAWS Puppy 2

 

Is your puppy already off to a good start with its training but you are both ready for the next step? Come have fun with your pup while advancing your skills!

This 5-week course is for puppies at least 6-7 months old and young dogs who are ready to move on to more reliable performance of the basics they already know. More emphasis will be placed on handler (owner) focus around distraction. As a team, you will be become able to to perform happily and reliably across environments.

Attention & Focus

 

Emphasis of this course is to improve and build a more reliable team through mastering attention  skills and focus on the handler around distractions.  We will cover a variety of exercises and games as well as loose-lead handling skills which will provide a well-rounded and reliable performance in all areas of your required training as a pet therapy training, AS WELL AS a well-mannered family pet.

This course is perfect for PAWS Puppy 1 & 2 students looking to take their training to the next level AS WELL AS current teams looking to refresh or expand their skills in this area of training as well as learning many other new exercises to aid in their training.

This class will prepare PAWS Puppy 1 & 2 students for the Therapy Prep Course.
*PUPPY 1 & 2 COURSES ARE NOT REQUIRED TO ATTEND THIS COURSE

Therapy Dog Prep: Targeted Training for the Prospective Therapy Dog Team

Throughout this 5-week course, handlers will have the opportunity to review and practice the basic skills necessary for their dogs to become therapy pets. We do lots of fun exercises to help you and your pup get ready for real pet therapy work. In addition, handlers can work toward passing PAWS’ Standards of Excellence Test (STEX), which is required for all PAWS Therapy teams, and/or the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test. CGC testing done at the last class.

  • Proof of current rabies and distemper vaccines must be provided prior to attending the 1st session for non-PAWS dogs.

Target Training

img_2399Target Training allows you and your dog to focus your training on 1 or 2 specific behaviors – things you either need to work on for pet therapy visiting or behaviors you are having trouble with at home. There are 4 cases when this type of class would be appropriate for you:

  • if you aren’t a PAWS member and want to work on a couple of “non-aggressive” behaviors
  • if you are concerned your pet needs to work on a few behaviors before coming to a PAWS’ orientation.
  • if you need help with just a couple of the commands required for STEX certification after a PAWS’ Orientation, or
  • if you need some help polishing a particular behavior to advance your level of STEX certification.

Advanced Skills Training For the Therapy Dog

During this 5-week course, we will address dealing with distractions, managing entrances and exits gracefully, negotiating equipment, positioning your dog for a more engaged visit and strengthening the “leave it” behavior. We will explore tricks and behaviors that will encourage people to interact with your dog in addition to strengthening basic obedience skills.

Tricks of the Trade

 suzanne-fields-jacksonCome learn valuable “tricks” that you and your therapy companion can use while visiting! These are all simple to learn and can add variety to you own repertoire of fun behaviors that can entertain and distract. “Tricks” include:

  • High 5
  • High 10
  • Gentle paw
  • Putting head on lap
  • Crawl
  • Spin (left and right)
  • Toss a treat
  • “Reading” a book
  • Back up
  • Waiving goodbye (or hello)
