On Saturday, April 21, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at Newark United Methodist Church on Main Street in Newark, the New Ark Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Michael Larkin, will take a musical journey through the animal kingdom in a creative and fascinating choral program, “All Creatures Great and Small.” More than fifty animals will be mentioned musically in a variety of styles ranging from choral masterpieces of the Renaissance and Baroque periods to a medley of novelty songs such as “How Much is that Doggie in the Window” and “Puff the Magic Dragon.”

The concert program will be anchored by a suite of compositions by the Welsh composer Ivor Davies, Prayers from the Ark, entertaining and thoughtful settings of poetry by Carmen Bernos de Gasztold, written from the point of view of several animals on Noah’s ark. In addition, the Chorale will sing Animal Crackers, humorous settings of Ogden Nash’s poetry by the contemporary American composer, Eric Whitacre, and settings of William Blake’s “The Lamb” and “The Tyger” by music director Michael Larkin.

The concert promises to be a unique and entertaining choral experience as we partner with Paws for People to help promote their mission to train and schedule therapy dogs in the Delaware Valley area.

Tickets are $15.00, $12.00 for Seniors, $5.00 for Students and are available at the door or by calling 302-368-4946. You can also purchase tickets online by visiting the New Ark Chorale website at http://www.newarkchorale.org/ . We Hope to see you there!

SWEDESBORO — Christine D’Amico of Pitman smiled as her son, Jacob, 5, read a Transformers book to his new furry friend, Remi.

Staff photo by Lori M. Nichols/Gloucester County TimesFive-year-old Jacob D'Amico, of Pitman, reads to "Remi" as the dog's owner, Sharon Bednar, watches at the Swedesboro Library Monday night. PAWS for People puts on a program in which kids can read to trained therapy dogs to help increase their confidence in their reading skills.

“Jacob is autistic so talking to people is not very easy for him,” D’Amico said. So, she brought her son to participate in PAWS for Reading at the Swedesboro Public Library Branch. “He does very well with animals. He’s actually been reading very well.”

D’Amico said the atmosphere — a packed area with lots of distraction — is usually one her son wouldn’t normally do well in, but on Monday, he was reading away.

“We’ll definitely be doing this again,” she said.

PAWS therapy team Mary Chris Thompson and her therapy companion, Sophie, were recently featured in the "Women of Gloucester County" for the work that they do with the PAWS for Reading program.

"A few weeks ago, I found the friendliest face to get a shot that I was looking for. I ended up at Staples where I met Mary Chris, or MC as fellow employees called her, and we quickly became fast friends. We talked about what I do as a photographer. MC said she had a perfect person/photo op for me. I needed to meet Sophie! OK I was game.

Who was Sophie? Well, it turned out that she is a border collie/black lab – a pet therapy companion that MC has been in training with through PAWS for People. In this particular program, MC and Sophie go to libraries and children get in line with their favorite books to read to Sophie. Yesterday, I was in Staples again and MC said they were going to be at the Gloucester County Library for reading that very night. I said, "Why not?" and right after dinner, I headed out the door. What a treat I discovered!!"
