This class is for you if…
- You have taken at least one basic obedience class with your dog and learned basic behaviors (sit, stay, down, etc). This class is meant to enhance basic skills and learn more skills that can assist you and your dog while doing therapy work.
- You'd like to brush up on some visiting skills like "not pulling" when walking and eye contact when visiting.
- You (or a friend) think your dog isn't quite ready for PAWS and want to work on skills to get your dog ready.
- You have a new puppy that has lived with you for at least 6 months & would like to start preparing to be a PAWS member
- You want a stronger bond with your dog and to share your dog through therapy work.
- Please leave aggressive and/or reactive dogs at home!
Loose leash walking is an important skill.
What Every Therapy Dog Needs to Learn is
- A 6 week training class focused on teaching your dog good pet therapy behaviors
- This is NOT a basic obedience class
- We will teach you and your dog what you'll need to be a successful therapy team
WHY THIS TRAINING IS IMPORTANT TO THERAPY WORK: We are offering this class as a way for you to sharpen skills already in use and to learn new skills which will propel you from an average visiting team to an outstanding team. It will teach dog & handler basic visiting skills and manners – skills that aren't taught anywhere else!
This is the only course of its kind in the country. There will be all sorts of games which will help your dog be more attentive and well-mannered. There will be homework!

Leaning and holding still for petting are essential skills that will be taught.
The course will cover
- attentive walking (no pulling or tugging)
- attention/watch – eye contact
- reliable recall
- ignoring distractions/comfortable around other dogs
- entering and exiting/elevator and sliding door behavior
- visiting options – lean
- and a whole lot more!
Requirements
- No dogs under 6 months
- Dogs must have completed an obedience course, or please set up an evaluation to be sure you & your dog are ready for the course.
- All dogs must be up to date on their shots and state license (if their state requires it).
Sessions will be held on Thursdays at 6:30 PM at the Brennan School at 144 Brennan Drive, Newark, DE. The cost is $125. The maximum class size will be 8 dog & handler teams (only one handler per dog, please). The course is open to the public. Our first session filled up quickly, so be sure to register early!
We hope you'll join Cyndi Turoczy (Lead Dog Trainer of PAWS for People), Karen Kedda (Lead Dog Training Assistant), and Tara Rowe (Dog Training Assistant)!
