Summer’s Bounty

Presented by:

Summer is all about fresh. Take advantage of all that the summer months have to offer, especially enjoying the bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables that are in abundance during the summer months.

A How-To Guide:

to help you pick the best of the bunch when you are perusing the produce aisle.

The produce listed below are Delaware specialties. Eat local and support our Delaware farmers.

Cherries: Look for firm, deeply colored fruit with stems still attached, and store in the refrigerator. Want a faster way to pit them? Simply crush them with the flat side of a chef ’s knife (be careful if the juice splatters!), and pluck out the exposed pit.

Corn: When you peel back the husk in the store, you’re looking for fresh silks and tight rows of kernels. For a healthier way to enjoy them, try grilling them and topping with a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a sprinkling of chili powder.

Bell peppers: Avoid dull, shriveled, or heavily marked peppers, and refrigerate them in plastic. For a healthy twist on nachos, swap out your standard tortilla chips with thick wedges of bell pepper, top with extra veggies and beans, and sprinkle lightly with cheese before baking.

Cucumbers: Firm, deeply colored cucumbers that are heavy for their size indicate a good selection. Slice and add to a pitcher of ice water at your next party for a subtle yet refreshing flavored beverage!

Berries: All varieties should be vibrant, plump, and dry. Store in the refrigerator, and don’t wash until just before using. For a real treat, spoon a dollop of part-skim ricotta into a bowl of fresh berries, drizzle with just the smallest amount of pure honey, and sprinkle a few pistachios on top.

Zucchini: Prime zucchini are shiny and firm, and should not be washed until ready to use. Try something new and instead of turning on the oven and heating up the entire house just to bake a loaf of zucchini bread, why not try some no-bake zucchini bread bites? Mix 1 ½ cups oats, ⅓ cup sliced almonds (chopped), 1 tbsp. chia seeds, ¾ cup almond butter, 2tbsp + 1tsp honey, ¼ tsp cinnamon, and ¾ cup packed grated zucchini (squeeze out excess moisture); roll into 2tbsp balls and refrigerate 1 hour.

Melons: Select melons that are heavy for their size and symmetrical in shape, and store at room temperature until cut. Medium-sized cantaloupes make fun, edible “bowls” for just about 100 calories per serving: halve, remove the seeds, and place ½ cup of plain Greek yogurt and a handful of berries in each half (makes 2 servings).

Peaches: Look for firm fruit with fuzzy, unblemished skin, and store at room temperature to use within 1-2 days. For a quick dessert, halve and pit your peaches, brush lightly with oil, and place cut-side down on a greased, preheated grill for 3 minutes, then flip and cook another 3-5. Top with a dollop of vanilla yogurt or a drizzle of coconut cream.

Tomatoes: Choose vibrant and firm tomatoes, and store at room temperature for up to 1 week. Marinate thickly sliced tomatoes and tofu (drained) in 4 parts extra-virgin olive oil, 2 parts minced garlic, and 1 part balsamic vinegar for several hours or overnight. Arrange on a platter with sliced fresh basil and another drizzle of balsamic vinegar.

words from the editors and publishers:

The Delaware Lottery has a new promotional piece that I stumbled upon the other day. It says, “Your lucky number is out there. Go Play it!” The ad includes a license plate with the Delaware license number 7429. At first glance, I could have sworn that was my son’s license plate number: the same four numbers in just a different order. It’s one of those things where you are sure that it has to be some kind of sign, a sign that compels you to do what? To play the daily four digit number of course. I can remember laughing when my father would watch the drawing of the daily numbers and undoubtedly find some connection between the numbers drawn and a group of numbers he might have played and why, and his explanation for arriving at this conclusion was always hysterical. . .and often unclear on just how there was any correlation. I always found his number-picking strategies and rationalizations puzzling, especially since he was a remarkably intelligent man. But here I am: Ready to play the Delaware lottery using a variety of combinations of the same four digit number the lottery is advertising. Everyone wants to have the winning number…and “You’ve got to play to win”. Kudos to the Delaware Lottery for creating a marketing piece that directly speaks to me. By the way, the combination of numbers I’d likely play—my son’s license plate number— have only been drawn in that order 3 times since 1999. As you all know, our philosophy at Living Well Magazine is that healthy living comes in various shapes and sizes. Moderation is key. For my father, rolling the dice on the Delaware Lottery was a fun, exhilarating, strategic and, most importantly, a reminder that it’s really hard for things to always fall perfectly into place, but when they do—jackpot! So enjoy the month of August. FYI

Meat Grown in a Vat May be Coming to Stores in 2018 Although billed as a sustainable source of meat, the necessary use of fetal bovine serum is a major controversy. Hampton Creek—the company behind a variety of vegan packaged foods from mayo to cookie dough to salad dressings—is planning to make that happen. Last week, the company announced that it’s been working on technology to produce lab-grown meat and seafood; and in an interview with Quartz, the company’s CEO Josh Tetrick said they’ll have product on store shelves by the end of next year. Other startups working on so-called “clean meat” produced in a lab aren’t expected to get anything to market until 2021.

Halfway thru the year 2017 remains the 2nd hottest year to date. The continued near-record warmth is a marker of just how much global temperatures have risen thanks to the greenhouse gases accumulating in the atmosphere from fossil fuel use. How monthly temperatures differ from the 1951-1980 average. So far, 2017 ranks behind only 2016 for the temperature for the first six months of the year.

Organic Foods Are they really Organic? Eggland’s Best eggs, marketed as certified organic by Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch, come from hens that never go outside. Aurora Organic Dairy, which supplies organic milk to Walmart, Costco and other major retailers, doesn’t adhere to organic standards that require cows to be outdoors daily during the growing season. Some “organic” soy and corn imports aren’t actually organic. Some “organic” foods contain a synthetic oil brewed in industrial vats of algae. What you can do: You can look up all the milk carton codes on the “wheredoesmymilkcomefrom” website. Pay attention to who certified your milk or eggs as organic. In addition to the USDA organic seal, certified organic products must list, on package, the name of the independent body that certified the product to organic standards. There’s an argument to be made that certifiers should be held accountable for certifying products that don’t adhere to organic standards. Until that happens, avoid certifiers like Quality Assurance International (QAI) and the Colorado Department of Agriculture, which certify Aurora Dairy. Some of the more reliable certifiers include Oregon Tilth, PCO (Pennsylvania Certified Organic) and California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). source:cornucopia.org www.livingwellmagazine.net

“Personally, I wasn’t expecting it to be as warm as it has been,” Ahira Sanchez-Lugo, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration climate scientist, said in an email. “After the decline of the strong El Niño I was expecting the values to drop a bit and rank among the top five warmest years. This year has been extremely remarkable.” NOAA released its global temperature data for June and ranked June as the third warmest in its records. The four-warmest Junes in its records have all happened in the past four years. NASA, which released its numbers ranked June as the fourth hottest. The two agencies handle the data slightly differently, which can lead to small differences in their rankings, though they strongly agree on recent warming. Every month of the year so far, including June, has ranked in the top three hottest for that month. Overall, the first six months of the year were 1.64°F (0.91°C) above the 20th century average of 56.3°F (13.5°C), according to NOAA. They were 0.29°F (0.16°C) behind the same period in 2016, which turned out to be hottest year on record, but ahead of 2015 by 0.09°F (0.05°C). According to NASA, the first six months were 1.64°F above the 1951-1980 average. Five of the six continents had a top 10 warmest January-June, with South America hitting the No. 2 spot for that period (tying with 2010 and behind only 2015, according to NOAA. Wherever its final rank ends up, 2017 will almost certainly be hot enough to knock 1998 — the only remaining 20th century year among the top 10 warmest — down another spot, to No. 9 in NOAA’s rankings. New Products from Recycling Ocean Plastics

made from plastic debris from oceans and beaches. Each pair reuses 11 bottles worth of plastic and features laces, heel linings and sock liners also made from recycled materials.

A recent study published in the journal Science estimates that there are some 86 million metric tons of plastic in the world’s oceans today— and that every year we add another eight million more. The pieces of plastic we discard break down into smaller and smaller bits during their travels through the ocean, but never break down completely, becoming part of our food chain when consumed by marine life. According to the non-profit Plastic Oceans, plastic particles outnumber plankton (the feedstock of the marine food chain) by a factor of 26 to one in some parts of the ocean. Meanwhile, the BBC reports that anyone consuming an “average amount” of seafood in a given year ingests some 11,000 plastic particles annually.

Meanwhile, Norton Point sunglasses teamed up with the non-profit Plastic Bank in launching three styles of eco-friendly sunglasses made out of plastic collected around Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts where the company is based.

The good news is that some companies are trying to do their part by collecting and incorporating ocean plastic debris into their products lines and packaging. Most recently, Canada’s Lush Cosmetics announced it would start using in its packaging ocean plastic collected by volunteers in and around Vancouver,BC, where the company is based. Meanwhile, Method Home has been working with its recycling partner Envision Plastics to take plastic waste collected from beaches around Hawaii to go into its new line of Home Dish+Hand Soap bottles, now available coastto-coast. Method’s soaps are mostly biodegradable and the company powers its factory with renewable wind energy.

Yet another twist on keeping plastic waste out of the ocean comes from Florida-based Saltwater Brewery. By now, we all know about how those plastic six-pack can holders can get wrapped around unsuspecting marine wildlife and choke them or cause internal distress if ingested— so the small beer maker has started manufacturing so-called Edible Six Pack Rings made from barley and other natural materials that break down easily once in the ocean water column and are easy for animals to digest, just in case one or two gets loose during your next picnic or outing on the water.

Perhaps a more surprising user of ocean waste plastic is Dell Computers, which recently started processing plastics collected from beaches, waterways and coastal areas and using them as part of the packaging system for its leading “2-in-1” laptop line, the XPS 13. Likewise, German activewear maker Adidas has partnered with the non-profit “Parley for the Oceans” in launching three lines of its popular UltraBoost shoes all

And then there’s Pharrell Williams’s newly released clothing line, G-Star RAW, which uses plastics salvaged from shorelines around the world and turns them into a clothing fiber called Bionic Yarn. Jeans, graphic tees and kimonos are the company’s first products using the nouveau earth-friendly fiber, but fashion forward consumers should stay tuned for different products and styles coming soon.

Rise in tick-related meat allergy

The lone star tick is named for that little splotch in its back, which someone apparently thought looked like either a star or the shape of Texas.

Image does not depict actual size.

Once only found in the southern part of the U.S., the lone star tick is now being found further north and west, and so are reports of allergic reactions to meat following a tick bite This bloodsucker is thought to have given thousands of Americans a dangerous meat allergy. Once thought to be confined to the southeastern United States, the allergy is appearing in people who live all the way up in northern Minnesota. The tick is moving across the country. The lone star tick has been known for at least a decade. “There’s this syndrome that’s fairly newly recognized,” says Dr. Bobbi Pritt, a Mayo Clinic parasitologist. “It’s called alpha gal syndrome.” Dr. Pritt says the tick is thought to inject something into the person it’s biting. “One of those substances causes our body to form antibodies to this alpha gal sugar,” adds Dr. Pritt. The result can be an allergic reaction to meat. Poultry and seafood are all fine. Alpha-gal is a small carbohydrate. It contains two building blocks from the same chemical family as table sugar, stuck together in a specific 3D orientation. Alphagal is all-natural. You can find it in most mammals. That includes most of what’s on the menu at your typical summer barbecue— beef hamburgers, bacon toppings, maybe even a little venison. However, monkeys, apes, and humans don’t make alpha-gal on their own. Tick saliva is a bounty of stuff, which evolved so a tick could gorge itself on your blood while you remain oblivious. One study from 2013 turned up alpha-gal itself in a tick’s digestive tract (not the lone star tick, but another tick that is believed to be leading to meat allergies in Europe). That lends some support to the idea that a tick bite sends “invading” alpha-gal into people’s bloodstreams, leading to antibody production, and eventually, the meat allergy. The reason our bodies can recognize and react to alpha-gal as a foreign molecule is that we don’t already have it in our cells. If we did, an allergy to alpha-gal would actually present as some kind of autoimmune disorder, where the body starts attacking itself.

Symptoms occur several hours after eating the meat and can include itching, hives, swelling of the lips, mouth and airway – even anaphylactic shock. “I would emphasize it is relatively rare, although, we are getting more reports of cases,” cautions Dr. Pritt. Most importantly, when you come in from outdoors, check yourself, check your kids, check your pets for ticks, and remove them right away,” says Dr. Pritt

To take care of a tick bite Remove the tick promptly and carefully. Use tweezers to grasp the tick near its head or mouth and pull gently to remove the whole tick without crushing it. Other methods — such as applying petroleum jelly, fingernail polish, rubbing alcohol or a hot match — aren’t recommended. If possible, seal the tick in a container. Put the container in a freezer. Your doctor may want to see the tick if you develop signs or symptoms of illness after a tick bite. Wash your hands with soap and water. Also wash the area around the tick bite. When to seek emergency care— Call 911 or your local emergency number if you develop: A severe headache Difficulty breathing Paralysis Heart palpitations

PAWS for People™ Pet Therapy Teams

Bring Comfort & Joy to Many

• Students, anxious about final exams, seem less stressed and more focused • Elderly residents in assisted living facilities are less solitary, more engaged and active … •

Alzheimer’s patients find comfort and feel calmer…

• Children, struggling with reading, become more relaxed and receptive… What’s the common denominator? All of these individuals are benefiting from a visit with a PAWS for People pet therapy team. PAWS for People is a nonprofit volunteer organization that provides one-on-one animal-assisted therapy to children and adults with physical, social and emotional challenges. Founded in 2005 by former teacher, Lynne Robinson, PAWS for People has grown to be the largest pet therapy organization in the mid-Atlantic region, with close to 500 teams of dedicated individuals and their therapy pets serving more than 160 facilities throughout Delaware and parts of PA, NJ and MD. Visitation sites include hospitals, assisted living facilities, Alzheimer’s units, chemotherapy treatment rooms; physical and occupational rehabilitation; hospices; and drug and alcohol treatment centers. A PAWS therapy team consists of a person and his or her pet - usually a dog, but cats and even rabbits are welcome. Once they are members, teams are required to complete stringent training to ensure they can provide the most effective interaction with therapy recipients. Upon certification, team members must agree to visit at least two times per month - many exceed this requirement by working at community events or attending special PAWS education-based events. Teams must be re-certified every two years. Pet therapy offers a multitude of benefits According to Robinson, ”It’s well known - and scientifically proven - that interaction with a gentle, friendly pet has significant benefits. Our mission is to lovingly provide elders, children, and folks with disabilities individualized, therapeutic visits with a gentle, affectionate pet. Our focus is on the healing aspect of pet therapy and our highly trained teams aim to provide the best possible visit for all those involved - the recipients, the therapy companion and the pet.” Pet therapy has been shown to improve both mental and physical health among adults and seniors of all ages. For example, a visit from a pet therapy team can help decrease isolation, agitation, boredom and depression; reduce loneliness; provide comfort and a calming sensation; and, in some cases, bridge communication gaps. From a physical perspective, pet therapy has been shown to stabilize blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, heart attacks and stroke, improve cardiovascular health and diminish overall physical pain. The very act of petting can produce an automatic relaxation response. 12

PAWS offers a multitude of programs Through Executive Director, Lynne Robinson’s, vision and guidance, PAWS now offers programs in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, treatment centers, hospice organizations, and dementia/Alzheimers units PLUS a range of specialized programming that serves varying populations. Some examples include: The PAWS Courthouse Canines program which was created to provide therapy teams to assist children who are going through our court process. The PS (Psychiatric Support) PAWS program that trains therapy teams to work with individuals in mental health facilities - helping to increase motivation, lessen anxiety and, ultimately give patients hope for the future. The PAWS by Special Request program enables individuals to request a personalized visit with a PAWS therapy team. PAWS for Reading teams provide reading sessions in schools and libraries to help children enjoy reading while improving their literacy skills with the comfort and encouragement of an affectionate cat or dog. The PAWS Autism Initiative and Pre-K PAWS programs help assist pre-readers and children on the Asperger’s and autism spectrum. The Student DeStress program has found wide success as therapy teams visits college and university campuses during exam time to help students relax, unwind and take a break from their studying.

development. In addition, we are looking forward to extending our reach even farther into Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Training sessions for potential PAWS pet therapy teams in these areas, as well as here in Delaware, are held four times monthly and the response has been terrific. The public has demonstrated its value for pet therapy and the myriad benefits it provides through its continued interest in and demand for our programs.”

PAWS community presence PAWS teams are everywhere. Often teams will participate in an event to help an organization that supports the people PAWS serves, e.g., the Downs Syndrome Association Buddy Walk, NAMI Walk, etc. Many times teams attend community events simply to engage the public, recruit new teams and volunteers, and raise awareness of PAWS and its services. According to Clarice Ritchie, Community Engagement Director, “It’s been rewarding to see the wonderful response from the community to our participation in these events. It reinforces the strong impact PAWS continues to have throughout our region.”

The road ahead As PAWS for People continues to expand both teams and programs, Robinson looks ahead: “We recently relocated to a new facility in Newark which gives us more flexibility for training and program

Harvesting, Storing and Preserving Herbs from the Garden

Melinda Myers

Enjoy herbs all year round. Harvest herbs now for garden-fresh meals and preserve a few for the winter ahead. Snip a few leaves or leaf-covered stems as needed. For the same intensity of flavor, you generally need two to three times more fresh herbs than dried except for Rosemary which has an equally strong flavor fresh or dried. Continue harvesting herbs as needed throughout the growing season. And don’t worry about harming the plant because regular harvesting encourages new growth which means more for you to harvest. Just be sure to leave enough foliage to maintain plant growth.

Or bundle several stems together, secure with a rubber band and use a spring type clothespin to hang them in a warm dry place to dry. Make your own drying rack from an old embroidery hoop, string and S hooks. Visit Bonnie Plants do-ityourself Herb Drying Rack project (bonnieplants.com) for detailed instructions. Get creative and use some of your herbs to make a fragrant edible wreath. Use fresh herbs that are flexible and easier to shape into a wreath. They will dry in place and can be harvested as needed.

You can remove as much as fifty percent of the foliage from annual herb plants. This is about when the plants near their final height. You can remove up to one third from established perennial plants that have been in the garden for several months or more. Harvest when the plant has formed buds, but before they open into flowers for the greatest concentration of flavor. This is the perfect time to harvest herbs you plan to preserve.

Speed up the drying process in the microwave. Place herbs on a paper towel-covered paper plate. Start with one to two minutes on high. Repeat for 30 seconds as needed until the herbs are brittle. Store dried herbs in an airtight plastic or glass jar.

Use a pair of garden scissors or pruners for faster and easier harvesting. Make your cuts above a set of healthy leaves to keep the plants looking good. Then preserve the flavor and zest of herbs with proper storage and preservation. Store thin leafy herbs like parsley and cilantro for up to a week in the refrigerator. Place in a jar of water, like a flower arrangement, and loosely cover with a plastic bag. Keep basil out of the fridge to avoid discoloration and others on the counter for quick and frequent use. Wrap dry thicker-leafed herbs like sage and thyme in a paper towel, set inside a plastic bag and place in a warmer section of the refrigerator. Freeze sprigs, whole leaves or chopped clean herbs on a cookie sheet. Or pack clean diced herbs in ice cube trays and fill the empty spaces with water. These are great for use in soups and stews. Store the frozen herbs and ice cubes in an airtight container or baggie in the freezer. 14

Living Well With Yoga

Yoga is a gentle way to bring a balanced attitude to all aspects of life. Yoga can help you control your weight more effectively, whether you need to lose weight or to gain it. Yoga encourages concentration and strengthens willpower, and the techniques of Yoga are enjoyable ways to change your attitudes about exercise, diet, and self-image. With Yoga, you’ll feel better about yourself as you follow a weight-management program.

Exercise. People who hate to exercise usually don’t do it regularly. Yoga exercise is self-motivating because, after a short time of regular practice, one finds that the body actually enjoys practicing Yoga exercises. As the personality becomes quieter and freer from stress demands, the person finds more time to pay attention to inner feelings, needs, and thoughts. This makes a more complete, balanced person who can face stress with greater ease and strength. Although the exercises of Yoga will not take off inches as fast as more vigorous exercise, Yoga will improve your shape by stabilizing metabolism, improving posture and circulation, and toning muscles in the back, stomach, and legs. Yoga exercises release muscle tension and increase flexibility so that you feel more relaxed and poised. Stress. The constant demands of stress greatly contribute to the body being out of balance. Through the practice of Yoga, you are able

to choose how you wish to react to the stressors in your life. Many overweight people have learned to automatically reach for food as an escape from stress, for immediate comfort. Yoga changes your desires so that you are more likely to use a breathing or exercise technique instead of food when you feel stressed. You no longer want to harm yourself with destructive eating habits. Yoga meditation and breathing techniques are your best and fastest techniques for dealing with stress. Meditation. The relaxation and meditation aspects of Yoga support all your behavioral goals. Regular practice of meditation helps build concentration and willpower, which helps you stick to calorie or portion allotments, or to a regular daily exercise program. Meditation also may help stimulate insight into the unconscious motivators of your eating behavior. A word about diet pills and fasting. Yoga provides a type of motivation you can’t get in a pill. When you want to take care of yourself, the things you do for yourself - exercise, good nutrition, getting enough rest - don’t seem like a chore; instead, they make you happy. Fasting is discouraged in Yoga; it is not only stressful to the body but a form of violence to it. In Yoga, your body is your friend; if you treat it with respect, it will support you in everything you need to do. For more about nutrition, visit our pages on Vegetarian Diet and Nutrition. A daily 30-minute Yoga program of exercise, breathing, and meditation will contribute to happiness, health, and well-being as you proceed in your weight-management program.

Living the UnBalanced Life

We are taught to strive for balance? How many times have you sworn that you’ll do better, be better, and “get more balance” in your life? Google “living a balanced life” and you’ll find over 8 million results in only .92 seconds so I’d say it’s something people are really interested in. If that weren’t true there wouldn’t be books, blogs, coaching events, and Facebook posts galore about “ how to achieve balance.” This isn’t another one of those articles. This article isn’t a “5 steps to a completely balanced, perfect, unobtainable life.” It’s designed to ask a few questions, maybe raise a few more and spark a healthy conversation about what we are all looking for. We have all tried to create the perfect work/home/friend balance or the perfect food/exercise/cheat-day balance. Have you ever watched your Facebook newsfeed and witnessed the wonderful tropical vacations, the perfect graduation ceremonies, the impeccably dressed couple at yet another exclusive retreat, the neighbor’s new car purchase, the homemaker mom with all the homemade recipes and wonder why your life feels so messy, unorganized, and dare I say a little crazy? Please tell me I’m not the only one to get out of work late and while so focused on what’s for dinner I forgot to pick up my kid from school, showed up to a meeting with the mysterious “white slime” on my shirt, and walked off the stage after speaking to over 100 doctors only to realize that my pants were unzipped. Seriously, am I the only one? I too live an unbalanced life! But I am thankful for it. Are you? I made the decision to embrace my unbalanced life. Please hear me out. I am not talking about accepting an unhealthy lifestyle because it’s easier to eat fast food than pack my lunch or accepting that I will just be a little smooshy because time doesn’t permit me to visit the gym 5 days a week. I made a conscience choice to evaluate what a balanced life really means and if that was what I really wanted. I discovered these things: What do you see when you look at a balanced scale? No movement, completely even, and completely static. I know I want movement in my life. I want to learn, challenge the limits, and continue to grow. My husband and I get out of town (just about) every 90 days. You don’t have to go on an extravagant vacation, you just have to experience something new. Science shows that a change of routine and scenery forces our brains to work in ways it doesn’t have to when we’re plodding along day after day in our balanced life. I’ve been coaching clients to take the every 90-day get-a-way challenge for a few years now and am continually receiving texts and emails sharing their adventures, stories of increased creativity, and increased productivity when they return. Can I balance family and work? Absolutely not! Why? You can’t balance passion. My work is my passion. Working with clients to help them achieve their health and wellness goals is what I was put here to do. My passion burns at my core and no amount of tired, article deadlines, lack of budget, or beat down is going to squash it. I include my family in my passion as much as possible. www.livingwellmagazine.net

I share essential oil tips with them, invite them to check out the garden, encourage supplementation and hydration. I love what I do so it never really feels like work. Can I balance quality time? No matter what your passion or calling is we only have 24 hours in each day. As my business grows I’m reminded that I will always have to give up something in order to gain something else. Especially when it comes to my schedule and responsibilities: business, exercise, errands, husband, children, grandchildren, hobbies, clubs, etc. the list could really keep going. Everything is competing for our most valuable resource—time. There isn’t enough time in the day to give each of these the time it demands or deserves. So I’ve gotten creative in combining activities. I coach clients to ditch the word “exercise”. We call it fun sweaty activity! Get the children (or grandchildren in my situation) outside. Run around at the park, have an Easter egg hunt in July, or design a treasure hunt in the neighborhood; even water gun fights can really get you moving. Definitely incorporate the whole family in meal planning and preparation as well. What if balance isn’t the answer? If it’s not the answer – what is? For me, it’s harmony. When you have the opportunity to hear me speak in person I’ll share my story about how I came to this line of work. Because of what I’ve experienced I believe life is too precious to not show up as the best version of myself. Life will always have it ups and downs. For me, living in harmony means, you understand there will always be challenges whether at work or at home. The key is to use the tools in your toolbox to communicate effectively, regulate stress responses, practice self-care, and appreciate those around you. More than 90% of your overall health and wellness is a result of personal choice so it is extremely important to pay attention to what we eat, drink, think, and do. When you’re ready to embrace your unbalanced life and update your toolbox please come to the First State Health & Wellness Integrative Health Center where we are committed to educating, inspiring, and facilitating health and healing through detoxification, nourishment, mindfulness and movement.

The Dance of Manifestation

extremely enlightening and effective, yet sometimes the effort of doing it arises from an underlying belief that “there must be something wrong with me” – in this case, that I’m harboring negative beliefs – and “I need to fix it.”

Suzanne Eder Theresa (not her real name) sat across from me, her head tilted slightly at an angle and her forehead wrinkled in concern. She had just finished telling me how long she has wanted to create an experience of financial prosperity, yet still she is struggling. She leaned forward and asked out loud, more to herself than to me:

Believing there is something wrong with us is a close cousin to believing in our not-enoughness, and both are in direct opposition to creating fulfilled and fulfilling lives.

“What am I doing wrong? Do I not want it enough? Is my intention not strong enough?” The kinds of questions we ask ourselves when things aren’t going the way we want them to go are very revealing. Theresa’s questions expose an underlying belief in what I call “not-enough-ness,” and the vibration of that belief prevents us from experiencing fulfillment because fulfillment arises from fullness, and that is the opposite of “not-enough-ness.” It is often true that the more we want something, and the longer we have gone without it, the more we are generating vibrational “static” that prevents us from harmonizing with what we want. The static arises from continuing to focus on our current circumstances, which reflect back to us our false beliefs in not-enough-ness of some kind – either that we are somehow not worthy of having what we want, or we’re not talented enough or smart enough or focused enough, or it won’t generate enough income, or it isn’t really possible, or it isn’t practical, or any number of “not enough” scenarios our minds conjure up when they are conditioned to focus on lack.

happiness.

And to make matters worse, our focus on negative beliefs can actually increase their power. As we examine and analyze them, we can easily convince ourselves that they really are true. We build up a case for them rather than learning how to shift our focus and create a case for our

There is tremendous liberation in recognizing the patterns of thought and belief that have been limiting us, and consciously letting them go while cultivating new patterns of thought. In fact, that is an essential aspect of the manifestation process.

A r e m i

But there is a huge difference between willing to recognize and release limiting beliefs and going on a search and destroy mission to eradicate them. One arises from expanding self-awareness and a commitment to loving ourselves forward. The other arises from self-judgment and a false, damaging belief that we need to be fixed before we can be happy.

I m b o

One is focused on freedom. The other is focused on punishment.

It isn’t that our desires and intentions aren’t strong – in their pure, noncontradicted state, they are innately powerful – it’s just that we usually contradict them with beliefs that don’t support them.

At the other end of the focusing spectrum lies an approach that can also be self-affirming and immensely effective but sometimes isn’t, which is the commitment to intensify our focus on what we want. This is a sane and loving approach when we realize that what we focus on is what expands in our lives.

What makes this challenging is that we’re often not fully aware we have those beliefs. We think we’re focusing on what we want, yet beneath the surface of our conscious awareness are conclusions we’ve drawn about “the way I am and the way life is. “ We’ve accepted them as our reality and don’t consider them to be beliefs that could be changed. We rarely even think about them at all. Yet they are a vibrating current of energy that isn’t in harmony with the energy of what we want.

Yet this approach often creates mixed or even unwanted results because, in our overly strenuous focus on what we want, we can end up with what I call the pasteover: we literally paste over our fears and negative beliefs with positivity, not understanding that the contradictory vibrations are still fully active, inviting the opposite of what we want into our experience.

Back in the day, many of us became almost obsessively focused on identifying and eliminating any and every limiting belief that prevented us from having what we wanted. That kind of exploration can be

The real art of manifesting our desires – the ones that feel most important to us and that have eluded us the longest – arises in the rhythm of focusing lovingly and persistently on what we want, becoming

aware as we move forward of the beliefs and thoughts we’re harboring that contradict what we want, pausing to acknowledge and release them and then refocusing on what we want. Focus, notice, release, refocus…over and over again.

It’s a dance and it’s a practice. And the more readily we can accept that the surfacing and dissolving of old limiting beliefs is actually part of the dance, the more willing we become to keep practicing it. With practice comes ease, and with ease comes trust. And with trust comes Grace. But we don’t have to wait until we’ve mastered all the steps before beginning to enjoy the dance. We can invite Grace at any time. The heart of this ease-filled dance is our union with the Divine…with Source… with the Universe…with God…with whatever you call the infinitely wise and loving intelligence that created this universe and everything in it. The more connected we are with that unlimited creative Presence within us, the more readily we learn the dance. That is why I encouraged Theresa to deepen her meditation practice, to set aside time to reflect on spiritual principles of abundance, and to create affirmative prayers or mantras that support her in connecting with the unfailing support of an infinitely abundant Universe. It is in moments of stillness and deep inner connection that we experience a felt sense of the Divine Presence within and all around us.

And once we have felt that Presence, we can recall the feeling. We can remind ourselves that we are part of a much greater Whole and that endless possibilities exist within it. We can choose to trust that we are meant to be supported in bringing forth our gifts and talents and passion in service to the world. In any moment we choose to trust, we open to Grace. We open to miracles. We open to a shift in perspective that shifts our vibration and begins drawing to us more of what we want. And so we relax more, we open more, we allow more in. And we begin to understand that the appearance of limited beliefs in our experience and in our awareness is evidence of our movement, not of our stuckness, as long as we don’t tango with them for too long. We learn to twirl them one last time around the dance floor and then release them into a spiral of dissolution. And we keep dancing. Sriracha Mac Serves 4+

I discovered the magic of Sriracha in my mac and cheese at a vegan diner in Chicago, and I’ve been hooked ever since. For a simple-yet-decadent version, skip the Sriracha, ginger, and scallions. Try adding your favorite veggies or switching up the delicata for sweet potatoes or any other winter squash.

Ingredients

Instructions

• One 12-ounce (340 g) package gluten-free macaroni noodles • 2 cups (230 g) peeled, seeded, and diced delicata squash, steamed • ¾ cup (180 ml) water • ½ cup (70 g) raw, unsalted cashews, soaked for 4 to 6 hours, drained, and rinsed • 1 garlic clove • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice • 2 teaspoons unrefined coconut oil • 1 teaspoon nutritional yeast • 1 teaspoon sea salt, plus more to taste • 1 teaspoon Sriracha (or any similar style hot sauce), plus more to taste • ½ teaspoon peeled, minced fresh ginger, or ¼ teaspoon ground ginger (optional)

1. Get a large pot of water boiling and prepare the macaroni noodles according to the package instructions. 2. While the noodles cook, combine the squash, water, cashews, garlic, lemon juice, coconut oil, nutritional yeast, salt, Sriracha, and ginger in the blender and purée until ultrasmooth. Taste and add more Sriracha if you like. Transfer to a large pot heated to low. 3. Drain the noodles and dump into the pot of sauce; add the scallions. Stir together, seasoning with more salt if necessary. Drizzle with toasted sesame oil if you like and serve warm.

• 4 scallions, sliced • Toasted sesame oil (optional) 22

Online Dating Concierge Services Dianna Palimere

The number of people who report having tried online dating is approximately 50 million in the U.S. (www.statisticbrain.com). Several studies have been conducted to explore the demographics of the users, average amount of money spent on services, number of matches resulting in long-term relationships, marriage, etc. In a recent study completed by Consumer Reports, they found that “online dating, however painful and time-consuming, often does produce the intended result if you use it well—and persevere” (April, 2017). As online dating continues to become more and more common, there have been a number of companies offering a multitude of niche online dating services. The most lucrative of which, aimed at wealthy singles, who are willing to 24

pay a service to minimize the time and effort needed to meet potential partners online. Online dating services and dating apps (e.g., Match, OkCupid, tinder, Hinge, etc.) generally require that the user create an online dating profile, writing a bit about themselves, their interests, and what they’re seeking in a potential mate. In addition, users are either encouraged or required to provide a photograph of themselves. Once their profile is complete, the “painful and time-consuming” search can begin. This includes monitoring the account for expressions of interest, inbox messages, and/or chat requests. For those willing and able to pay for it, they can have someone else write their profile, monitor their messages, respond to messages, and even make arrangements for a date to meet in person. These services

are marketed as: online dating consultants, virtual dating assistants, personal dating assistants, outsourced dating services, online dating assistant, and my favorite—online dating concierge services. You might be wondering what’s included in such services. They offer multi-tiered options, depending on how much one is willing to spend. The more basic packages include a profile written by professional writers, a photo session—which may or may not provide slightly retouched photos (some even provide professionals to appear with you in photos, giving the illusion that you’re out with friends). Once the profile is professionally written and the photos are expertly staged and polished, they use various algorithms, keyword analyses, and search tools to scan profiles for the “exact traits” you’re looking for in a person to date. They will even provide hours of phone coaching to help you navigate through your real-time interactions and give dating advice (e.g., Tell you what to say next in a text message…). Packages like these start around $380/ month ranging up to $2,000/month for added services and benefits. One of the more popular websites, personaldatingassistant.com, caters only to heterosexual males, and provides the following as a description of their services: •

We manage your online dating profile

We send out laser targeted, personalized introductions on your behalf

We gamify the process, and generate profile views, resulting in more interest, matches, and inbound messages

We follow up, suggest a get together, and get her contact info. Setting you up right for the in-person date

Further, we don’t recommend that you tell a woman that you used our service until you’re sure that she’s very much into you. It’s highly unlikely that a girl who is in love with you would leave you just because the first few messages she received before you’d even met in person weren’t sent by you. However, a woman who just met you for the first time and is still forming an early impression of you is likely to be turned off by it.” I agree—a person is generally turned off when they learn that they’ve been misled, misinformed, deceived, hoodwinked, bamboozled or— dare I say, lied to in any manner. Open and honest communication is the foundation for a healthy relationship. Getting a professional to help you write your profile is somewhat common. There have been many clients that I’ve worked with who have struggled with online dating and I have helped them create and/or polish their profile. The key word there is helped. I didn’t write it for them. Moreover, I believe that online services that use experts to find the best possible match for you are great. Matchmakers have been used for centuries; and modern-day matchmakers are generally in the business because they have a talent for matching individuals and derive great joy in helping others find love. That’s wonderful. On a final note, if you truly do not have the time—or interest to prioritize the time for online dating, it’s highly unlikely that you have the time to create and sustain an intimate relationship. My suggestion for busy professionals who are struggling to find time to date is this: outsource other daily tasks; pay for service professionals that can take responsibilities off of your plate; hire a personal assistant for timeconsuming errands—not your love life.

The rest, is up to you. If you’re like me, you might be asking yourself, “Isn’t she going to be upset when she finds out that you didn’t write the profile and you’re not the person she’s been talking to online before meeting?” No judgements about dating assistance services—in fact, there are dating sites like Tawkify and ItsJustLunch that use professional match makers to help you find your ideal mate and offer varying degrees of dating advice and coaching. However, with those services, both of the individuals are aware of the service being utilized. The issue of note here is that one of the persons involved is completely unaware that there is even a thirdparty service being utilized, as with the aforementioned example. In the F.A.Q. section on personaldatingassistants.com, one user asked: Do the women know I am using your service? And the response was: “No, and they will never know unless you tell them.

Why Pay Attention to Your Dreams?

— Kat Samworth

Dreaming is a natural process that happens just by virtue of being human. And like other natural processes such as breathing, it does its work whether or not we pay attention to it. But like with breathing, if we do pay attention, we can begin to have a different and perhaps deeper kind of relationship to it. When we learn how to purposely take deeper breaths, we begin to have new kind of living connection to our body. It can be like this and so much more when we pay attention to the natural process of dreaming. When we intentionally dive deeper into our dreams, we develop a new kind of relationship with the totality of ourselves and to the world we live in. Humans have a good understanding of bodily processes like breathing, but dreaming continues to be something mysterious that we can’t quite pin down. Over the ages, there have been countless theories as to why we dream. In ancient Greece, it was believed that dreams came to heal the body. People would visit special temples to dream and be cured. In the last century, Sigmund Freud theorized that dreams came to fulfill wishes, often of a sexual nature. Carl Jung, friend and student of Freud came to his own conclusions. He believed that dreams were a portal allowing the conscious mind to access deeper unconscious energies. These include the “collective unconscious,” archetypal experiences common to us all. Many of today’s dream theories stem from Jung’s approach. 26

We can learn about theories and more theories. But it is often our actual felt experience of our dreams that really matter to us. We wake up with heart pounding after being chased by a scary man, or after flying over the top of our neighborhood. These moments, just after awakening can be incredible and can fill our bodies with a mystical kind of feeling and wonder. The sensation of the dream experience sometimes feels realer than real. Maybe this is why that no matter what the dream content, many of us are drawn to paying attention to what we experience in our dreams. It is the actual dream encounter is that pulls us in. Sometimes it feels as if our dreams are begging us to pay attention to them. Often, we quickly jump out of bed to start our day and sadly, the dream begins withering away. Sometimes we downplay the experience saying, “That was just a dream.” But what if our dreams are asking us to have a deeper kind of relationship with them? And in doing so, what if we can begin to have a different kind of experience in our waking world? A richer, deeper experience. Why should we pay closer attention to our dreams? Dreams know us better than we know ourselves The dream realm has access to all of our remembered and un-remembered experiences. For various reasons (often self-protective) the memory of some of these experiences gets tucked away or pushed down into the recesses of our unconscious minds. Dreams have a way of allowing certain material from these deeper places to bubble back up into our waking consciousness. We can then re-engage with this previously lost material in a safe and healthy way. Dreams come to heal Dreams know about our hurts and our traumas. They start the process of healing by bringing awareness to these difficult places. Examples include dreams with physical trauma such as car accidents, skin wounds or scars. One client had a recurring theme of limb amputations. Although these kinds of dreams may feel like nightmares, they show up to help us to feel into our need for help. It is in these vulnerable

places that we can begin to receive the support that we need. Sometimes the dream setting will be a hospital where perhaps a doctor or nurse will show up. I had one of these supportive dreams where I was in a hospital, lying on a gurney being tended to by a doctor and a nurse. Although the dream was years ago, I can still feel their tender love and support. Dreams show us who we really are As we move through life, we forget who we really are…who we were before we got conditioned into the person we’ve become. Often our dreams come to show us these lost parts of ourselves. A client came to me with a dream where she joined in with a circle of singers. In the dream, she felt engaged, joyful and alive as she sang with the group. The dream gave her this experience, which helped her re-ignite passion with in her that had long ago been put aside.

Dreams come to course correct Last night I had a dream where I was telling someone a half-truth. She called me out on it, saying she didn’t believe me. The dream is showing me a way I operate in the world, sometimes speaking half-truths. It can be painful for us to see the darker parts of ourselves. These are places we would rather not admit to. Dreams are extremely honest. They want to help us grow by shining a light of truth on us, giving us awareness of the destructive ways we operate. Dreams are this and so much more. They are an amazing natural resource available to us all. Paying attention to your dreams is like opening a door to incredible natural wisdom that is already held within you.

Dreams connect us with the sacred There are people, animals, images and objects that come into our dreams to be in relationship with us. My dream teacher, calls these experiences “sacred encounters.” These sacred beings/images find ways to provoke us, heal us and to love us. One of my clients had a dream encounter with some wolves. She was standing near a wolf pack feeling afraid and alone. Just then the baby wolf began playing with her, tugging on her clothes. The dream gave her an experience of a sacred archetypal connection across the boundaries of this physical world. These encounters can take many forms. In a recent dream, a man slipped a letter under my door. This too was a kind of sacred encounter. Dreams help us to feel more deeply Many of us tend to lose the capacity to fully feel our feelings. Some of us go numb after a traumatic episode. Others gradually lose connection as they step through difficult or even mundane life experiences. Our culture tends to celebrate positive feelings and push away difficult feelings. However, if we don’t allow the full spectrum of our feelings, we find ourselves living a kind of flat-lined life. Dreams want to wake us up to the fullness of all of our feelings so that we can live a truly vibrant life.

HANDS ON HEALTH by: Ann Wilkinson P.T.M.S,

Q:

I am curious what do you think of these new “fascia blasters”?

A:

A bodywork technique called “fascia blasting” is making the rounds on social media, and like cupping and cryotherapy, it has a lot of people asking: What is this? Let me start by explaining what is Fascia? You can’t see yours, but everyone has it. Put in the simplest terms, fascia is your body’s connective tissue that surrounds muscles and organs. Some experts liken the fascia to the white of an orange peel. Every move you make, every step you take, your fascia reacts to you. “If you’re dehydrated, suffer an injury, or perform any kind of high impact activity, this can cause the fascia to clamp up and adhere to itself and other structures in the body, I have had the pleasure of studying Myofacial release as it is presented by the three leaders in the profession including, the Upledger Institute, John Barnes P.T. and Dr. Janet Travell. I have not found or imagine a device that could reproduce the actual feeling for that skin to skin contact, continuous monitor and feedback loop direct to the brain and back. When I practice I constantly incorporate the knowledge of my teachers and thirty five years of experience, guiding me as to which approach to apply. Sometimes it can be a varying degree of combined techniques which can vary throughout any given treatment. I tend to use Uplegers principles if I am treating someone in a public place. or they are very new to body work. I am always using John Barnes and Fulford osteopathic principles as taught by Dr. Sanet throughout every treatment. I have found the approach Janett Travell, offers works on every strange case. These teachers were not only scientific they were artistic in the way they respond to the information transmitted by the fascia and their hands. I feel that if I am in the presence of the patient, I will use my best tool, MY HANDS. I would not use a fascia blaster in the clinic. The movie Avatar gives a great visual image of how the fascia is accessed by a trained practitioner. There are images that represent the microtubules of light in the fascia of the therapist and how they meld into the microtubules of light of the patient. This sensation guides the pressure that the therapist needs to provide in order to allow a release within the restriction. In order to have a Home Exercise Program that helps one carry over results from one treatment to another, I have taught fascial self releases using, a six inch ball. This is a somewhat gentle home program. I have found Yoga to be a great form of self Myofacial release in order to maintain fascial length. between treatments. Sometimes I give a custom Sadana (daily spiritual practice.) to patients of 5-7 exercises to be done daily to help offset the postures in their daily routines.

The fascia blaster might be okay as an adjunct to a true fascial release treatment from a professional therapist but not without proper identification and instructions on how to use it. Over the years there have been so many gadgets designed for home use that have come and gone and that have caused more injury with improper use. However, if such a device can bring greater awareness of the fascia as an organ, as a very significant structure than careful use may be permitted for my patients.

Q:

I am an active sixty year old male. For the last 6 months, I have had a more sedentary job. I feel my both of my legs and feet may be swollen and they feel slightly tingly. Can this be caused by circulation and not being active?

A:

Whenever someone says both feet, I think taibone. So first, I would access the sacrum and tailbone, piriformis and psoas muscles and pelvic floor. Many people with swelling in the feet or tingling have sacral or coccyx injuries and resultant torque in the pelvis and constriction of lymph channels. Unlocking the pelvis and deep releases of trigger points of the muscles of the pelvis, hips and low back followed by long, slow traction of the legs into the pelvis can be very helpful. I have had situations where a vertebrae or the sacrum shifted along with great lengthening noted in the manual traction and releases and symptoms melt away completely. So yes, it can be circulation from this perspective. If the symptoms did not decrease quickly, I would refer for vascular evaluation. In addition, I would find a way to increase your physical activity during the work day by either taking a few minutes to stretch, use the stairs or take a walk on breaks, this alone could decrease symptoms.

A fascia blaster can’t replace a full body alignment and the reception of information from a therapist. As well as it does not have the piezoelectric effect of warming, engaging and releasing of the fascia? 28

Help, My Son Has Lost His Way and Won’t Move Out

Joe White

In my 18 years of coaching people from every walk of life, I can clearly see trends of need. In the late 2000’s there were a lot of men who had lost their jobs and their way and women who felt stretched so thin trying to keep it together. Today I have more parents reaching out to me because of their 20-year-old son who is still living at home, having no drive or dreams and is just sputtering along. The young men often feel they are depressed and have settled into a bit of despair -- often the parents love them dearly and perhaps have over nurtured them.

4) Don’t let them off the hook. Thinking that being their friend will help but it could make it worse. We all need discipline, fair but clear consequences, will help to restore boundaries and build gentle but important accountability.

Here are five keys to help your son:

When your son, feels more grounded in his masculine energy, he will become more decisive and take more consistent actions. The 20’s can be hard, especially when you feel you don’t fit in and feel a bit lost. Thankfully with the right guidance, we can find our way.

1) Most of the time, they are not in their masculine energy. This means they will be indecisive. Pushing them, challenging them will only push them further away. You have to get them back into some form of masculine energy first. I always focus on getting them to do something that they used to love to do. Playing an instrument, working out, martial arts, painting, something simple that they can reconnect to themselves. Establish a sense of pride and competition. This is will help them to move back into their masculine energy.

5) Parents must maintain your boundaries. Your children are no longer children; they are adults. Update how you communicate with them. Speak to them as adults because that is what they are now.

Until next month, I wish you passion and love.

2) Telling them what they need to do, rarely works and usually comes across like nagging. Helping them to create their own solutions, always works out better. 3) Give them a little space. The more pressure they feel to decide or do now, the more they will shut down.

Addiction and Recovery: 7 Misconceptions about Alcoholism or Substance Abuse Liz Brown

It’s no secret that we currently have an epidemic of substance abuse in the US. Not only are opioids and heroin usage on the rise, but also the rate of alcoholism is skyrocketing. In fact, in 2015, the CDC reported the death rate from alcohol related illnesses such as cirrhosis of the liver and alcohol poisoning is at a 35-year high. Although most people are aware of the crisis, many may not have a clear understanding of what addiction really is. Let’s look at some of the common misconceptions.

7 Misconceptions about Alcoholism or Substance Abuse 1. If an addict had more willpower or greater moral strength they would just quit. The American Society of Addiction Medicine defines addiction as a chronic disease that affects many different functions of the brain, especially those related to reward, memory, and motivation. It is not a lack of willpower or a lack of morality. Some argue that addiction cannot be a disease because it involves a choice to use a substance. While it is true that this is the case at the start, the addicted brain takes over and causes cravings that are intense and hard to control. In addition, alcoholism is thought to be more than 50% genetic. 2. I can help my loved one by covering up the negative consequences of their behavior so they don’t get in trouble or to keep the peace at home. Covering up another’s behavior from addiction does not help and can “enable” the addiction to continue. While it is well meaning, it can make a bad situation worse and stops the addicted individual from suffering consequences that may contribute to them “hitting bottom” and hopefully changing. This does not mean we should not care or be compassionate, it just suggests allowing consequences to follow behavior. 3. Addiction only affects a certain kind of person. Addiction does not discriminate and impacts people of all socioeconomic groups, ethnic groups, races and gender. The rates may however vary slightly due to genetics. For some, opioid and heroin addiction begins as the result of prescribed pain medication taken for surgery or injury. 4. If my loved one really loved me they would stop. Many believe if they just threaten, beg, plea, yell they will be able to change their loved one’s behavior. While it is frustrating to watch a loved one suffer, the addicted brain is so strongly affected by the substance that judgment and decision-making processes become severely impaired. It is important for loved one’s to get help for themselves so they stop from becoming codependent. Groups like Alanon are very helpful support for family members. 5. Once the drinking or substance abuse stops, the addict is cured. There is no cure for addiction. The only treatment is abstinence from the addictive substance. Abstinence alone without other support can lead to what is referred to as being a “dry drunk.” This is a term used to describe someone who is not using but is still living a dysfunctional life. By contrast, recovery refers to the process of abstinence combined with 30

work to change dysfunctional behaviors. Depending on the severity of the addiction there are many options to begin the process. Treatment and recovery centers are designed to help the addict break away from the substance and replace with the needed support and coping tools. Programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are also valuable support groups to help with recovery one day at a time. Other people work with a doctor or other qualified professional to help them quit. Relapse is not uncommon and an individual has a better chance of continued sobriety is they enlist support. 6. “If I have a job, a family, a home life, I don’t really have a problem.” Many fall into the category called “functional.” Functional alcoholics or addicts can function at work, have relationships and a successful home life at least for a while. Addiction is a progressive disease which worsens over time. Although hiding the behavior might be possible for a while, but generally the negative consequences to health, ability to work effectively and maintain positive relationships surface over time. 7. Recovery will make my life miserable, boring or lonely. While recovery can be hard work, especially at first, it is a time of restoring the ability to find pleasure in life without relying on a substance. As the brain heals over time, the reward center can begin to find pleasure in ways that do not involve a substance. Rediscovering Joy through Recovery While it would be wonderful if giving up a substance would cause instant relief, generally the process is challenging. Often because of the addiction there may be many facets of life that need repair. The heavy shame that weighs on those suffering in addiction robs their joy and lifting the shame is the first step in restoring that joy. Recovery encompasses not only abstinence but also positive lifestyle changes and examination of thoughts and beliefs that are not healthy. Since many used abused substances as a means of coping with stress, new healthy coping strategies need to be learned. Creating a positive support system is critical in this process to allow a safe place to grow and change. Family members must also examine their own behaviors, thoughts and beliefs that may have helped enable and instead create healthy boundaries to restore positive relationships. The good news is life in recovery can be a time for finding or reestablishing meaningful work or hobbies, a fun social life and enjoyable relationships – one day at a time.

Mind Mastery—The Final Frontier Part IV Mind Training Nurtures, Weeds and Prunes Your Brain Karen Verna Carlson

Brain science is the profession of neuroanatomists. After Jill Bolte Taylor earned her Ph.D. she worked researching schizophrenia at Harvard and promoting their Brain Bank, while serving as the youngest member on the board of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), the largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of persons living with serious mental illness. Her brother was schizophrenic. Big Change She was 37 living a good life when a massive left brain hemorrhage erased her abilities to walk, talk, read, write, and remember. What remained functional was her right hemisphere, “where the essence of my being became enfolded in a deep inner peace,” she writes in My Stroke of Insight, a Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey (Penguin Group, NY, 2006). This is a riveting description of inner experiences for days in the hospital, weeks of strengthening at home, unable to function independently, preparing with her mom’s help to have her skull cut open to remove a golf-ball-sized clot, then months of rehabilitating brain circuitry. Real Fear “I feared that if they opened my head while I was already energetically compromised, I would never be able to recover my body or any of my cognition,” she shares at a time when she lay drooling, motionless and speechless with limited comprehension of the busy medical activity swirling around her hospital bed. Two Hemispheres Her story and descriptions of brain function from both academic and personal perspectives certainly opened my head at this fourth month stage of consistent, frequent daily mind training. The breath awareness and counting techniques I’ve shared in previous months soften the left brain’s dominance so that the right hemisphere can have more influence. Bitter-Sweet Liberation Dr. Taylor shares her extreme right brain experience. “I remember that first day of the stroke with terrific bitter-sweetness. In the absence of normal functioning of my left orientation association area, my perception of my physical boundaries was no longer limited to where my skin met air. I felt like a genie liberated from its bottle. The energy of my spirit seemed to flow like a great whale gliding through a sea of silent euphoria. Finer than the finest of pleasures we can experience as physical beings, this absence of physical boundary was one of glorious bliss. As my consciousness dwelled in a flow of sweet tranquility, it was obvious to me that I would never be able to squeeze the enormousness of my spirit back inside this tiny cellular matrix. 32

W ho Was Left or Right? “My escape into bliss was a magnificent alternative to the daunting sense of mourning and devastation I felt every time I was coaxed back into some type of interaction with the percolating world outside of me. I existed in some remote space that seemed to be far away from my normal information processing, and that it was clear that the ‘I’ whom I had grown up to be had not survived this neurological catastrophe. I understood that that Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor died that morning, and yet, with that said, who was left? Or, with my left hemisphere destroyed, I should now say who was right? Perception Shifts “Without a language center telling me: ‘I am Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor. I am a neuroanatomist. I live at this address and can be reached at this phone number,’ I felt no obligation to being her anymore. It was truly a bizarre shift in perception, but without her emotional circuitry reminding me of her likes and dislikes, or her ego center reminding me about her patterns of critical judgment, I didn’t think like her anymore. From a practical perspective, considering the amount of biological damage, being her again wasn’t even an option! In my mind, in my new perspective, that Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor died that morning and no longer existed. Now that I didn’t know her life—her relationships, successes and mistakes, I was no longer bound to her decisions or self-induced limitations. Grief and Relief “Although I experienced enormous grief for the death of my left hemisphere consciousness—and the woman I had been—I concurrently felt tremendous relief. That Dr. JBT had grown up with lots of anger and a lifetime of emotional baggage that must have required a lot of energy to sustain. She was passionate about her work and her advocacy. She was intensely committed to living a dynamic life. But despite her likable and perhaps even admirable characteristics, in my present form I had not inherited her fundamental hostility.

Simply Being “I had forgotten about my brother and his illness. I had forgotten about my parents and their divorce. I had forgotten about my job and all the things in my life that brought me stress—and with this obliteration of memories, I felt both relief and joy. I had spent a lifetime of 37 years being enthusiastically committed to ‘do-do-doing’ lots of stuff at a very fast pace. On this special day, I learned the meaning of simply ‘being,’ ” she muses. Shift Into Joy Given all the benefits and statistics I’ve previously cited promoting mind training, or mindfulness, or meditation JBT’s experiential account includes them all in a very concentrated dose. “Ultimately everything we experience is a product of our cells and their circuitry,” she says. “If you have lost your ability to experience joy, rest assured the circuitry is still there. It is simply being inhibited by more anxious and/or fearful circuitry. How I wish you could lose your emotional baggage…and shift back into your natural state of joy! The secret to hooking into any of these peaceful states is the willingness to stop the cognitive loops of thought, worry, and any ideas that distract us from the kinesthetic and sensory experience of being in the here and now.”

live without. Although it is easier for me to nip a weed when it is just a sprouting bud, with determination and perseverance, even the gnarliest of vines, when deprived of fuel, will eventually lose its strength and fall to the side.” Begin Now Right now, direct your attention to your nostrils and the sensation of the air coming in and going out. After a few breaths, move your attention to include your chest expanding and releasing for a few more breaths. If your mind seems restless, gently calm it by mentally reciting “I’m breathing in” as you inhale, and while exhaling think, “one, one, one” to fill the time until you begin the next inhale, “I’m breathing in.” Mentally recite “two, two, two” for the duration of that exhale. Follow a third “I’m breathing in” thought with a string of “three, three…” thoughts while exhaling. Cycle through the fourth set and begin the next set at “four, four, four” on the first exhale, and with each subsequent exhale work down to “one, one….” Start the next inhale thought, “I’m breathing in” then as you exhale count “one” repeatedly through that exhale and cycle through “two,” “three,” and “four.” Start the next set at “four” and cycle each exhale down to “one, one….” Do this frequently throughout each day. Be gentle with yourself. And enjoy noticeably more peace and better function.

Sacred Garden Says Dr. Taylor, “I view the garden in my mind as a sacred patch of cosmic real estate that the universe has entrusted me to tend over the years of my lifetime. As an independent agent, I and I alone, in conjunction with the molecular genius of my DNA and the environmental factors I am exposed to, will decorate this space within my cranium. In the early years, I may have minimal input into what circuits grow inside my brain because I am the product of the dirt and seeds I have inherited. But to our good fortune, the genius of our DNA is not a dictator, and thanks to our neurons’ plasticity, [and] the power of thought…very few outcomes are absolute. Conscious Tending “Regardless of the garden I have inherited, once I consciously take over the responsibility of tending my mind, I choose to nurture those circuits that I want to grow, and consciously prune back those circuits I prefer to

In other words, what’s the cost to your waistline, heart, colon, brain, energy levels, work productivity, and ability to concentrate? Bought meals (restaurant take-out, fast food, food trucks, pizza, etc.), on average, have more calories, saturated fats, salt and/or sugar than is optimum for health promotion. The real cost to this “convenience” is more than monetary. It’s an erosion of your comfort, health and productivity, and will likely lead to higher doctor’s bills down the road. A better option exists, takes far less time than running out to purchase lunch, and puts about $1500 dollars back into your bank account each year. It provides a healthier choice that is sure to dramatically improve your health, energy levels, and ability to function at your best. All you have to lose are inches and pounds. Please come closer so I can whisper in your ear. As an added bonus, “you will also have larger and more regular bowel movements.” You will feel lighter and more comfortable. The secret lunch food that I am referring to comes in a magic box of convenience. It is found in every grocery store, in every town, and is even discounted at the wholesale clubs. It costs only $5-7 and can provide you and your family miraculously with many meals throughout the week. Amazingly, it is triple washed— as if single or double washed was not already enough (mind blowing huh?). It comes in different colors and sizes and is full of life. “What’s in the box,” you say? Before I reveal the contents, did I mention that it fits easily on most refrigerator shelves? Ladies and gentleman, weighing in at one pound, hailing from America’s sunny fields, bursting with nutrients and fiber and prewashed for quick action, I present to you, “The Salad.” Wait, wait. Please don’t turn the page looking for another article. Give me a chance to explain how my champion can knock-out your current food choices.

Lettuce is full of phytonutrients. When found in plants, these organic compounds are believed to promote health and help prevent disease. The most well-know are the carotenoids, especially the orange-redyellow pigment beta-carotene. Converted to Vitamin A in your body, beta-carotene (from lettuce and other vegetable sources) provides about 50% of your vitamin A needs. Having plenty of beta-carotene in your diet has been shown to help prevent certain cancers and heart disease. It also fights the development of cataracts and skin disorders such as psoriasis and vitiligo. Besides all of the beneficial vitamins, minerals and other compounds, lettuce helps keep your pipes clean and can be a welcomed mouthful for those suffering from constipation. Its high cellulose content adds bulk to your intestinal tract and encourages peristalsis (the wave of contraction within the intestines). Lettuce is also high in mineral salts and helps restore balance when you are very acidic. Our bodies are meant to be at a pH of 7.4 (anything below a 7.0 is acidic). When your body is acidic (called acidosis), it is thought to encourage the unwanted growth of fungus, bacteria and viruses. Your body can become acidic from lack of exercise, stress, and the consumption of foods such as milk, coffee, heated fats and animal derived products. Being high in nutrients and very low in calories, lettuce can also be a valuable friend in the quest to lose weight. The bulk that lettuce provides brings a sense of fullness sooner. How many times have you heard, “I WISH I could eat as much as I want!” If it’s lettuce you’re eating, you essentially can! I personally value my BIG salad meal, especially during long days at my practice. I pack a feed-bag sized salad. It gives me a full belly and great energy levels for working with patients. I also find that despite the huge amount of salads I eat, my nearing-age-50 body remains at a healthy weight. I could delve further into detail about the minerals, vitamins and other valuables such as chlorophyll in lettuce, but there is a more exciting turn to take in this article! After all, you already know that when mum said to eat your veggies— she was onto something. As a true salad connoisseur, I would like to share with you my favorite toss. It is quick, tasty and will keep you full throughout the afternoon. I take it to work in a large glass bowl with a locking cover and bring my own homemade salad dressing in a glass bottle (just reuse a store-bought one).

I use vinaigrette containing extra virgin olive oil and apple cider vinegar. It is seasoned with sea salt, oregano flakes and smoked paprika. The dressing is a place where you can be creative and change it up to keep it interesting. When you are ready to eat, pour in your dressing, close the lid and shake vigorously.

The benefits of using organic ingredients are immense! If organic ingredients are unavailable, still eat this powerhouse of a meal. Even with pesticides, it’s still likely healthier than your old lunch choices.
